Stranger In The Alps

Phoebe Bridgers' debut pairs a close, unshowy voice with songs that find unsettling details in everyday relationships. Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska helped build arrangements that can feel almost empty before strings, electric guitar or a second voice change the space around her.

“Smoke Signals” opens with patient, suspended movement, while “Motion Sickness” turns a difficult relationship into a sharply drawn pop song. The difference between those tracks explains much of the record's appeal: its quiet delivery never limits how direct the writing can be.
