Chino Moreno's voice shifts between force and distance, while the rhythm section keeps the changing textures connected. “The Spell of Mathematics” gives that balance a particularly spacious setting. The closing title track arrives with a clearer, more direct guitar figure, ending the album with a different kind of lift without abandoning the weight of what came before.
