Funeral

Arcade Fire

By Maeve C.

Funeral sets private grief against the communal sound of Arcade Fire’s early lineup. The “Neighborhood” songs build small scenes into large arrangements, with strings, keyboards and massed voices giving the record a sense of people gathering around a story.

“Wake Up” turns wordless singing into its central hook. Régine Chassagne’s “In the Backseat” closes on a different scale, beginning quietly before the instruments and voices swell around her.

SourcesArtist discography explicitly dates Funeral 14 September 2004.
North American 14 September 2004 precedes UK February 2005.
