Black Sabbath recorded Vol. 4 in Los Angeles and widened the range of sounds around their heavy guitar riffs. “Supernaut” and “Snowblind” carry the physical weight associated with the band, while other tracks step away from the usual electric attack.

“Changes” places Ozzy Osbourne's voice against piano, and “Laguna Sunrise” makes room for acoustic guitar. Those pieces change the pace without breaking the album's mood. The contrast gives the heavier songs more room to register, especially when the record is heard in its original sequence.
