Atom Heart Mother
Pink Floyd
By Maeve C.
Pink Floyd gave the first side of Atom Heart Mother to a long suite arranged with Ron Geesin, bringing brass and choir into the band's instrumental experiments. Its scale sits strangely beside the uncaptioned cow on the sleeve, a Hipgnosis image that avoids the expected psychedelic graphics.
The second side turns toward individual songs, including Roger Waters's “If,” Richard Wright's “Summer '68” and David Gilmour's “Fat Old Sun.” “Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast” then brings everyday sounds into the studio. The album moves between grand arrangements and small domestic details without settling on one approach.
