Friends That Break Your Heart
James Blake
By Maeve C.
James Blake makes fractured friendships a central subject on Friends That Break Your Heart. The production is more open to familiar ballad forms than some of his earlier work, but layered voices and electronic details still complicate the apparently straightforward melodies.
“Say What You Will” considers comparison and self-acceptance, while “Coming Back” gives SZA a role in a conversation about return and disappointment. The title track brings the focus back to bonds that are not necessarily romantic. The relatively direct arrangements put the wording and vocal delivery close to the listener.
