The Unforgettable Fire

U2

By Maeve C.

Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois joined U2 for The Unforgettable Fire, recording at Slane Castle and Windmill Lane in Ireland. Their first collaboration shifted the band away from War's hard outlines toward drifting keyboards, spacious guitars and songs that leave more room around Bono's voice.

“Pride (In the Name of Love)” keeps a clear, ringing chorus at the centre of that change. “Bad” builds through repetition, while “4th of July” reduces the group to an atmospheric instrumental. The contrast makes the album feel exploratory without losing the urgency of its predecessor.
