Seventeen Going Under
Sam Fender
By Maeve C.
Sam Fender turned toward his own upbringing on Seventeen Going Under, working again with producer Bramwell Bronte. The songs place family tensions, friendship and the pressures of growing up in a working-class town inside large guitar arrangements and strong, shared choruses.
The title track revisits adolescence without making it sound simple, while “Spit of You” considers a relationship with a father. Saxophone and driving drums give those private subjects an outward energy. The album's scale comes from making specific memories singable, with the discomfort still present inside the melody.
