Led Zeppelin III
Led Zeppelin
By Maeve C.
Jimmy Page and Robert Plant spent time writing at Bron-Yr-Aur, a cottage in Wales, before Led Zeppelin III. The setting helped bring acoustic material to the foreground, although the record still opens with the compressed force of “Immigrant Song.”
“Gallows Pole” gradually adds instruments to a traditional song, and “That's the Way” stays closer to an intimate folk arrangement. The contrast between the album's electric and acoustic sides shows the band extending its vocabulary. The quieter playing gives Page's arrangements and Plant's phrasing a different kind of room.
