Double Negative

Double Negative puts Low's closely joined voices inside a much harsher sound world. Working with producer B. J. Burton, Alan Sparhawk, Mimi Parker and Steve Garrington let distortion, broken rhythms and electronic noise interrupt the songs rather than simply decorate them.

“Quorum” establishes that unstable ground immediately. Even when the sound seems close to falling apart, Parker and Sparhawk's singing provides a clear human presence. The final “Disarray” allows more light into the record, making its sense of release depend on everything the listener has passed through before it.
