Remain In Light
Talking Heads
By Maeve C.
Talking Heads and Brian Eno built Remain in Light from repeated grooves and interlocking instrumental parts. Sessions began at Compass Point in the Bahamas, with overdubs turning the performances into dense arrangements that drew on funk and African music, including the example of Fela Kuti.
“Born Under Punches” introduces the restless layering, while “Once in a Lifetime” sets David Byrne's spoken phrases against a firm rhythmic foundation. The slower closing songs change the atmosphere without abandoning repetition. Listening through the album reveals how much variation can happen inside an apparently fixed pattern.
